Now that our planned trip to drive our 1904 Oldsmobile from San Francisco to New York has been postponed until 2010, I have had more time to study the planned route. This epic journey was going to follow the route as near as possible to what Whitman and Hammond took in the factory Oldsmobile in 1903 to be the third vehicle to successfully cross the USA from coast to coast. In those days the roads were mere tracks used by wagons but now those sandy and muddy tracks have become paved roads. Quite a chunk of the route is now an Interstate (motorway) and we weren’t particularly looking forward to travelling at 25 mph on such busy roads so I started considering planning another route.
Then an email arrived with an invitation to visit Oldsmar in Florida. The town of Oldsmar was founded by Ransom E Olds, also founder of the Olds Motor Works, manufacturers of Oldsmobile motor vehicles. In the lobby of Oldsmar City Hall there is a replica of a 1904 Oldsmobile.
To visit a town with such a connection to the Oldsmobile car marque seemed appropriate but it was situated over 1,200 miles from New York our destination. There was only one thing to do – change the route and finish in Oldsmar. Have a look on our route page. We will travel 3,500 miles coast to coast from San Francisco (Pacific Ocean) to Daytona Beach (Atlantic Ocean) and then finally to Oldsmar. It will be a very challenging journey and I can’t wait to get started.
Please get involved by sponsoring a mile, or more.
Great blog, keep up the work. I have just started my own blog and I love checking out others to see what can be done.
This is very awesome—- there’ll likely be many Oldsmobiles and Oldsmobile lovers ( and auto lovers in general) there to greet you when you arrive in Oldsmar. Good luck on the trip, hope 2010 comes soon.
I hope everything goes OK!
